About Game animation & rigging

Game animation brings characters and creatures to life in response to player input: walks, runs, jumps, attacks, dodges, hit reactions and idle loops. Studios, indie developers and teams working with motion capture rely on freelance animators and riggers to produce full animation sets or to support an existing pipeline. Good animation is also what makes controls feel responsive, so it shapes how a game plays, not just how it looks.

The work starts with the rig: an engine-compatible skeleton, controls, skinning and sometimes a facial setup. Then come the animations, looping or one-shot, with or without root motion, exported as FBX to Unreal Engine or Unity. Artists work in Maya, Blender, 3ds Max or MotionBuilder and can also clean up or retarget mocap data. To begin, provide the model or existing skeleton, a list of animations with durations and in-game use, the engine and version, and video references of the motion you have in mind. Facial rigs and blend shapes for dialogue scenes can be added when your game needs close-up storytelling.

On hi-3d, game animation and rigging is a subcategory of video games. Browse artists' services, compare reels, prices and lead times, and invite the one whose sense of motion matches your game. You follow progress in the project conversation: key pose blocking, refined animation, revision rounds, then delivery of the exports and source files.

Ask for a demo in a game context or a playblast from the gameplay camera, because animation is judged on how readable it is in motion. Spell out the transitions you expect between clips too, since they are often missing from briefs. A studio might, for example, commission game animation for its hero: twenty-five locomotion and combat clips ready for Unreal Engine 5, plus a rig its own team can extend later.
